Best WordPress Plugins Of The Year

This post is going to be something a little different.

Instead of reviewing websites, today we are going to look at some of the best plugins for 2016 because WordPress is so popular!

I mean, look at the growth of WordPress since 2016:

And this trend has continued on into 2016.

So without further huffing and puffing, here are some of the best plugins you can try in 2016.

SEO Plugins

No WordPress website is complete without an SEO plugin. They give you all the features you need to make your website SEO ready and give you a way to beat the competition on Google.

There are really only two SEO plugins worth mentioning for WordPress:

These plugins have been going head to head for years so it is very hard to compare them, but if you want to see which is the best for you check out this Yoast and All in One plugin comparison.

Then you can head over and download the plugins in the WordPress directory.

Social Media Plugins

One of the next most important things you can do for your WordPress website is enable social media sharing.

There are so many plugins around for WordPress, and social media specifically, that it is very hard to know which one to choose.

Here are a bunch you can consider when thinking about your next social media plugin:

The free plugins are great, but just be aware that they also come with conditions like Simple Share Buttons now tracks all clicks for their own purposes.

Social Warfare just released a new version that is also free here.

Contact Form Plugins

Of course you want people to be able to contact you when you have a website. It is one of the most important parts of being a business owner and having a presence online.

However, not everyone does this. You should.

And one of the easiest ways to enable this is with a contact form or form plugin.

Here are some of the best around to get you started with your contact form on WordPress:

Whether you choose for one of the free ones (Contact Form 7 is great) or a paid version (which have more support and features) is up to you.

Backup Plugins

Another area you really need to take care of with WordPress is backup. You never know when something can go wrong, and if it does and you don;t have a backup then…boom!

No more website.

So in all seriousness, please take backup very seriously (too many of the same word there I know!).

Things have moved a lot in the backup scene in WordPress, so now I would recommend you use Vaultpress from WordPress themselves (it is only $5 a month – cheap to have peace of mind)

There are a few more options for backup such as:

One of these babies will certainly fulfil your needs. So give them a try

Last Thoughts

Starting a WordPress websites can be daunting, but with these plugins you will be off to a great start. And soon, maybe, you will also appear in the Best Websites of the Year.

Best Hosting Company Websites of 2016

We all know that the web is supported by websites. But below that is your web hosting company, or even a hosting company for far more complex applications like databases (mysql, oracle etc) or even specific applications like Blackbaud products like Raisers Edge.

So we thought we would take a look at some of the best websites around for hosting companies of all shapes and sizes.

Let’s just right in.

WPEngine – Dedicated WordPress Hosting

WPEngine are well known for the dedicated WordPress focused hosting. They are very strict in their control over websites, disallowing a lot of plugins for the good of the customer.

They focus on improving speed, performance, and overall maintenance of website, but they also have a very focused and high-converting websites as well.

They have a great hero section driving users to the right goals on the site, as well as captivating imagery and calls to action (both in the hero section as well as the header). And the rest of the site is very conversion oriented as well.

Concourse Hosting Blackbaud

Concourse Hosting – Blackbaud Hosting

More of a niche hosting service, but definitely one worth taking a look at is Concourse Hosting.

They offer hosting for Blackbaud software and the related products of Raisers Edge and Tableau.

Their website is very well designed with very clear goals and layout just like WPEngine. They are driving people to the main areas of their website as well as collecting emails for their specific customer-focused campaigns to help on-board them as well.

Definitely a website that is keeping up with the pace in 2016.

Traffic Planet WordPress Hosting

Traffic Planet Hosting

Another WordPress focused hosting company worth checking out are Traffic Planet. They are focused on providing speed, with their SSD servers, and their website brings this information to the potential customer very quickly.

They have a number of calls to action, like WPEngine, with the bar at the top of the page highlighting their SSD offering. They also have a handy comparison table on the homepage so that visitors can easily see what they are getting compared to other services.

Testimonials, a very powerful way of getting people to trust you on a new site, are also clearly displayed, helping to convert that traffic asap.

Rackspace – The Original Cloud Hosting

When looking for one of the big boys in the hosting space, you can’t move past contenders like Rackspace. They have been doing this since the beginning and are a key player online.

It is interesting to see, in comparison to other websites out there, that their website is not as conversion focused or easy to navigate. This seems to happen a lot to bigger companies as their offerings expand and their focus broadens (i.e.. no focus). And you can see this has happened on the Rackspace home page in the image above.

However, they are still one of the better hosting companies out there and worth mentioning in this piece.

Digital Ocean Hosting

Digital Ocean – Hosting For Developers

The last site I want to mention, in stark contrast to Rackspace, is Digital Ocean.

Their offering is simple, and to the point. Their website follows suit, quickly and clearly demonstrating what they have to offer and getting you to the right information quickly.

They show you the key benefits of what they do and have the information you need available at your fingertips. They also have key calls to action in place to help get visitors to the right places and to take the action they intend. The sign of a great converting website. Especially in the competitive hosting space.

Hosting Websites Vary Alot

As you can see from this quick coverage of a variety of hosting companies, the way in which they design their websites varies a lot.

From the simple and to the point, to the more complex to navigate. All is possible.

What other websites do you think are worth mentioning here?

Best Music Service Websites of 2015

We are always looking for amazing websites. And people are always looking for amazing new music. That is where this post really comes into it’s own.

The best music websites of 2015 are going to blow your socks off!

We are going to list some of the best music websites we have come across, and have used, and show you just have diverse the choice is in the music arena today.

So without wasting any more of your time, let’s take a look at the best in music.

Spotify – The Best In Europe?

For music lovers in the USA, it is normally all about Pandora. And why not? They dominate the online music market and have a lot to offer.

But another great online music provider, with a stunning website is Spotify.

Founded in Sweden, Spotfiy is also now readily available with apps on almost any phone and device, including games consoles and TVs. They are really one of the best providers around.

So if you need to discover some new music, or just listen to the music you love, check them out!

Deezer – Another One To Watch?

Another great music website founded in Europe (this time Paris, France) is Deezer. Although a little slower on the uptake, Deezer has since boomed expanding into nearly 100 countries around the globe.

Deezer actually now one of the largest track collections as well as one of the nicest interfaces which makes finding and listening to music a pleasure.

So if you are on the hunt for a new music service, they are certainly worth a look.

Tidal – Now Owned By Jay-Z

Since its purchase by Jay Z, Tidal has been relaunched and is perhaps one of the best music services to watch.

They have over 35 million music tracks as well as over 85,000 music videos.

Their claim to fame is their high fidelity lossless audio, which premium music lovers will like. Although in all honesty, it is not necessary and most mp3s we are used to listening to are lower in quality than the CDs we used to consume.

Apple Music – A Little Bit of Controversy

Apple has a little bit of arrogance as we all know, and this showed a little when they launched Apple Music earlier this year.

They wanted to get people on board as quickly as possible so offered it for free. For a while.

The problem was the way in which they were going to pay, or not pay, the artists. This lead to a major boycott started by Taylor Swift, which has since been resolved.

The service is obviously more tightly tied in to the Apple services such as their cloud, so in that sense it may not suit everyone.

Pandora – Last But Not Least

One of the leaders in the field, and more of a music discovery service, Pandora is certainly worth checking out.

Pandora Internet Radio (also known as Pandora Radio or simply Pandora) is a music streaming and automated music recommendation service powered by the Music Genome Project.

The big problem with Pandora, for the rest of the world at least, is that due to licensing issues they are usually not available. They block it at the IP level based on country. So for most people outside the USA, unless you are using proxy to hide your location, this is not an option.

Check Them All Out

All the music services are great, but honestly with free trials on most of them, I recommend you test a few out before committing to one of them. As once you do, it is harder to move (with your play lists, favorites etc.).

Best Social Media Tools Websites

When you see a lot of the websites out there that accompany the SAAS tools we have to use, it is not always great.

So we wanted to cover that in this post. The best websites that accompany some of the Social Media Tools that we use and have tried over the year (2014 in case you are reading this later).

We will quickly outline which tools have great websites, why and show you a screenshot to demonstrate.

mav social media tool

A social media tool we have tried as an alternative to the likes of Buffer and Hootsuite, MavSocial have a lot to offer in terms of

  • social media campaigns
  • sharing of media (images, videos)
  • social media campaign metrics.

But what was impressive for an up and coming social media tools is that they have most of their website sorted and shining too.

For example they have a nice hero section at the top of the page, with a video displaying what their tool is all about. Not fuss, just what you need to know from the get go.

And then as the homepage progresses they reveal more useful information, which is simply need to know. They of course have an detailed industry blog, with loads of useful posts too.

Buzz Sumo Content

A definite up and coming tool with purpose, is BuzzSumo. It is making a bit of a splash in the social media and blogging world.

BuzzSumo basically index content and tell you what is popular.

For a given:

  • topic
  • website
  • type of content

and much more.

They also show you what kinds of social shares it is getting and by who. So it really is handy when you are trying to see how your content is going and who is sharing it.

Their website and blog is also right on target. Not the most stunning we have seen, but in the social tools scene, it is right on the mark.

On their homepage again, they have a simple message with an image (which could be a little clearer perhaps) and then testimonials just underneath.

This is a very worthwhile thing to do on your homepage.

Their blog is also detailed and very on topic for the social media scene.

So all in all an impressive entry in the social media tools websites.

Not entirely social media, but very much used in the blogging and social media scene is Canva.

They enable users to make amazing visuals for all kinds of occassions from

  • blog posts
  • social media posts
  • presentations and cards

This tool has obviously been embraced by people as it empowers them to make graphic design standard images without the skills.

And there about page, which perhaps should be there home page as it is so well done, is very detailed and simple to understand. The key to enticing people to sign up.

And their blog is one of the best in the business. It informs people about their tool, and how to improve design. So really sells to the right market.

When it comes to social media tools, and other specific categories of SAAS tools these days, the website is often not as good or focused as it should be.

For companies like this, it is not so much about design as conversion. Getting the message across from the get-go is crucial, as is having a great blog that is informative and helpful.

So if you take a look at all three of these three companies, you are sure to come away better informed.

Feel free to leave a comment below and let us know what you think.

Website Page Builders – Lead, Sales, Webinar pages

There are a lot of amazing tools out there today to create websites using WYSIWYG online tools (such as Webs, WIX and the like).

But if you are the owner of an existing website, whether it is pure HTML or a CMS like WOrdpress, sometimes it is hard to take control of your own site when you need something simple like:

  • A Lead Page
  • A Sales Page
  • A Webinar Page

And other similar pages that you need to create from time to time.

Each time you need such a page, you often have to contact a web design company and pay through the nose.

But what if there was a better solution?

Web Page Builders

There are some amazing options when it comes to website page builders today. And we are particularly impressed with a couple of them.

So in this post we are going to quickly go over the kinds of things you can do with them and the results you can achieve.

One of the industry leaders as far as we are concerned is Leadpages. If you want a detailed Leadpages Review, then head over here to my friend’s site and read this very detailed review. There is more than enough detail to fill in what we don’t cover.

So what does Leadpages actually do.

It is a simple template based web page builder where you can use existing proven high-converting templates to create all kinds of pages (lead, squeeze, sales, webinar etc).

They have a lot of customers so they know their pages work very well for collecting leads.

The system is quite simple:

  • Choose a category and template
  • Edit it with your colors, text, images (all click and edit – simple)
  • Save and complete the settings (email list, webinar login etc) and publish

When you publish you have a number of easy options:

  • Connect to WordPress (via their custom plugin)
  • Publish to a Facebook tab in your Facebook page
  • Host on their website (then you don’t need a website domain name)
  • Copy the HTML to your website

They also have other great supporting features like:

  • Media delivery
  • Optin popups from a button or image
  • Split Testing

and a number of other things you can read in the review we mentioned.

Thrive Content Builder (Update May 2015)

I wanted to add this one in, as it is a great up and coming tool that has since come out.

Thrive Themes is a great company run by Shane Melaugh (read more about him at his IMImpac site), who also has built some great SEO and optin plugins before. So he has a lot of internet marketing experience and WordPress as well.

His latest achievement, which is actually a combination of plugins and website builders and themes. You can buy either Thrive Themes, Thrive Content Builder (that comes with Thrive Themes) or the latest addition, Thrive Leads.

In this section I will quickly go over Thrive Content Builder as it is a true WYSIWYG website builder. That means you create it, see it, and it is exactly how it will be when published. Not something you normally get with WordPress.

For a complete review of Thrive Content Builder, I recommend you head over to this review from Ashley at Madlemmings.

Basically Thrive Content Builder allows you to create WordPress pages and posts with almost zero technical ability.

That have a drag and drop editor that allows you to change all the elements and styles on a page:

  • size, width/height, color, font
  • margin and padding
  • location

And on top of that they have all the elements you could need to add to a page

  • rows, columns, content boxes
  • text, wordpress text, images, videos
  • price tables, testimonials, star reviews and maps

and of course much more.

This is one of the simplest and most powerful additions to WordPress I have seen in a long time and I whole-heartedly recommend it.

Optimize Press

Another great alternative that is specifically designed for WordPress is Optimizepress, now on Version 2.0

This tool is a little more complex than Leadpages, but it makes up for it with the flexibility that it offers.

Basically Optimizepress is a fully fledged page and site builder that you can use inside WordPress.

It enables you to add and customize elements anywhere with almost anything.

So in many ways the two tools are quite different and intended for different audiences.

One if a quick and proven template tool for creating high converting pages.

The other is also stylish and mobile responsive, but requires a lot more time and patience. As you have to tweak everything to see how it all works.

You can see a video showing that below:

As you can see it is pretty easy to create stuff in Optimize Press, but it is lacking some of the features that you find in LeadPages.

So if you are looking for simple and high converting landing pages (sales pages etc) then Leadpages is the way to go.

Whereas if you are looking for a simple to use page and site builder inside WordPress and you don’t want to learn HTML etc, then this is a great way to create awesome sites.

As I mentioned they are really for different audiences.

SO head over and check them both out in detail and see what you personally think before you make any choice.

But indeed, gone are the days of having to be a web developer to create awesome websites.

Websites With The Best Video Content

There are many different ways to use video on a website, and I wanted to showcase some of the best, or at least better, examples I have seen around the web.

So I want to briefly cover some of the methods and examples in this post.

Video as Content

One of the most effective ways to use video in this day and age is to have it as a major piece of content.

This could be a sales video, on your sales page of a website. Or it could be the opening video on the homepage, showing what your message is and what your company is all about.

The decision on what exactly you are going to do with video content is up to you.

But one thing is clear, Google and customers in general favor video, and having a lot of it on your site is ideal.

So here are some examples of companies including video within their content.

Video On the Homepage

Nest are a very modern and innovative startup company with some of the most interesting products I have seen in a long time.

On their homepage they showcase these products with an image slide, and part of that showcase is a link to videos explaining the products.

With sometimes complex products, it is certainly a great way to get the customer involved and also educate them at the same time.

So go and check out Nest if you want to see how this can be done well.

nest homepage video

Video In Blog Posts

Without a doubt one of the most popular ways of using video on websites is to include it within the content itself.

Everyone is doing this of course, and it can certainly help to add to the post being written or completely dominate it if there is little or not text.

But in this example I wanted to show you how Video Production Kent is doing it, because they are a video production company. And who better to teach us how to use video in content than a company making video!

video production kent blog content

Videos on Website Backgrounds

Video is on of the best ways to catch the attention of the public nowadays. Amazing videos have the capability to draw the attention of people and hold it for significantly longer periods than say a standard image.

The recent  use of videos on website backgrounds have added a dynamic element to many websites and is a perfect opportunity to display some creativity on a website.

I have found a couple of websites where we think this kind of technique has been particularly well done and we wanted to show you the ones we have so you can be impressed too.

So without further or do, I present the websites with awesome video backgrounds.

Paypal manages to draw you into their site with seemingly banal videos. For example, one that they use quite often shows a man simply collecting a package. Nothing more.

Paypal website video

Billabong – I Surf Because

is a far more complex example, becuase they play and load a lot more video. So the experience is not one of being a background so much, as actually being the experience on the site as a whole. Because this appeals to a far larger crowd, it is probably more effective to do it this way.

billabong i serf because

The End

I hope some of these examples have helped or inspired you to use video more in your websites. It certainly is a great way of adding a bit of variety and interaction into the content that you provide.

Your customers will certainly appreciate it, because a picture is a thousand words, and a video – must be many millions!

But either way, video is here to stay and is making our web experiences so much better.

So get on board and start using video today!

Tips For Locating The Best Video Websites

best video websites youtube video

As a lot of people have found out submitting videos to different websites is a great way to get a following and share their valuable information.

The problem you may have is not knowing or researching what would be the best video website to submit your video to.

This often leads to you not submitting your video at all.

However, by using some  of the following tips it will be simpler for you to find the best video websites.

Not only that, but you will know that you are going to be able to share your information with like minded individuals, and also get the information shared on the Internet for everyone to see.

Types Of Videos Accepted

Generally these video websites are going to accept only a specific type of video or even specific codecs (here is more information on that).

Sometimes people never think about this and assume they will be able to submit their video to any website they come across.

However, some of the video websites are going to accept only certain types of videos.

A good example of this is when you have a woodworking video, then you would not want to submit it to a specific website that all about dog training.

So you will want to make sure the video you are submitting is going to be sent to a website that accepts the topic of your video. Otherwise you are just wasting your time.

Amount Of Niche Traffic The Video Website Gets

Typically you will want to have niche traffic for the video as this is the most targeted. This type of traffic is going to impact how well your video is going to do for it’s chosen theme and the kind of video marketing you can do.

It also pays to have great video production behind you, so that the quality is the best that it can be.

However, if you are not aware of the specific traffic for a website, you could easily select a video website that does not get any traffic for your niche.

So do some research before hand and learn what sites have the traffic you are looking for. This will tell you if submitting the video to the website is worth the hassle or if you are making a mistake submitting the video in the first place.

Categories For Video Submission

Typically when submitting a video to a particular video website, like YouTube or Vimeo, you may will find it has a variety of categories available.

Since these kinds of video websites have so many different categories available, you will need to use some knowledge upfront to help to decide what category to submit your video to.

By learning about this ahead of time, you can determine if you will be able to submit the video to a specific category that covers your niche

Otherwise, it might be worth just giving up on the project right away. Or choosing a different website to submit it to. Not having the right category is a big issue.

Different Restrictions In Regards To What Can Be On The Video

You might need to find out what kind of restrictions each website has regarding the videos you wish to submit.

For example, some of the videos have to be unique to the website and the Internet as a whole.

Other websites do not mind having a duplicate video as long as the description is different.

Either way you need to make sure they look at the restrictions that are present in the website.

This will ensure that you do not go to all the work of getting a video ready to be submitted only to see it is not accepted on the website at all.

As many people have found out it is nearly impossible for them to submit their video to the main video websites because the video may not fit in the right category.

Even worse they are worried about the video being rejected for one reason or another.

This is when you should use quite a few of the above tips to help them in figuring out what is going to make the best video for each website.

Once you know  this, it will be easy to get your video uploaded to the right website. And you will not have to worry about the video not being accepted or gaining the views you need.

So don’t be put off by all the sites that are available and all their rules, just do your homework first and you will be fine.

Web Design for Small Business

Web Design For Small Businesses: What Should Businesses Keep In Mind?

These days, it’s vital that every company have a strong website behind them. This is doubly true for a small business. Small businesses don’t have the kinds of budgets that major companies do, which means their website is a huge part of their marketing efforts. When it comes to web design for small businesses, a number of things will need to be considered.

Computer Web Design

Simple Web Design

An attractive yet simple web design is the most important thing to start with. A design that’s overly complicated may be difficult for customers to navigate, which can scare them away quickly. In additional, complex sites can take a long time to load.

Responsive Design

It’s also important that small business owners create a site that looks good on mobile devices. These days, many people are accessing the internet primarily through their mobile devices. A site that won’t load well on their phone is a site they’ll stay away from. So make sure you are using Responsive Web Design.

SEO Incorporated Web Design

Small business owners should make sure to focus on both standard SEO techniques and local SEO. Local SEO will help a business improve their local listings. This is vitally important for any business that’s primarily targeting a local market. Most local SEO techniques are very simple to implement. For example, adding a site to directories will automatically give rankings a boost. Including a local phone number and address on the web site will also help a great deal. Adding a map with directions is another way to make local SEO improve. wordpress logo

Try WordPress for Your Website

WordPress is a technology that can make web design for small businesses a much simpler process. They have a variety of themes that are perfect for businesses, and have plug-ins that will improve SEO. WordPress is very easy to work with even if a person isn’t tech savvy. It’s designed to be intuitive.
